magazines and newspapers UK
The Daily Mail
Daily Mail 15 Feb. 2005
No, this is no joke, if you want a nasty, vindictive, spiteful, racist daily newspaper, and some people obviously do, then this really is the one for you. I honestly believe that this paper gradually poisons the mind of those who read it on a regular basis. I cannot imagine how viewing every situation from the most negative point of view, could not, would not, colour your view of the world and of your fellow man.

Read here why the University of Sussex have banned it from their campus shop.

Also have a look at the Daily Mail Watch, with lots of 'classic' Daily Mail front pages.

The Guardian

Newspapers are such a subjective thing, one mans favourite read is another mans object of hate (see my review of the Daily Mail above). My cup of tea is the Guardian. It gives excellent coverage of UK and World events. There's not too much celebrity nonsense, good environmental reporting and excellent photography. You can see the front page and read today's news here.

What I think is clear, The Guardian has an really progressive web-team, with most articles online and you can even subscribe to a digital edition of the complete paper here.

The Guardian has now changed its format to the Berliner size, but I'm sort of fond of this one now.

The Ecologist
The Ecologist
A highly respected UK magazine giving good in depth articles on all environmental matters. The website includes excellent archive and news sections.

They say, 'Founded in 1970, we are the world's most widely-read environmental magazine. And we are non-profit.Read by over 200,000 people on four continents, The Ecologist tackles a broad spectrum of issues from human rights, pollution and corporate corruption to misleading science, organic living and getting the most out of daily life.'

All in all - excellent.

Ethical Consumer Magazine
Ethical Consumer Magazine
Ethical Consumer magazine is produced by the Ethical Consumer Research Association (ECRA).

ECRA was founded in June 1987 and is a not-for-profit, organisation owned and managed by its staff as a workers' co-operative. Proud to have maintained our independence, ECRA is funded almost entirely by readers' subscriptions and by adverts from ethically vetted companies.

George Monbiot

Not a magazine but a UK based columnist and commentator who writes of a large number of magazines and contributes to the Guardian. This archive of articles is searchable so you can look-up what George has said on a range of subjects. Although you may not agree with him on all subjects the articles are very well written and provoking.

New Internationalist - Magazine

With over 30 years of publishing under its belt, and more than 75,000 subscribers worldwide, the New Internationalist is renowned for its radical, campaigning stance on a range of world issues, from the cynical marketing of babymilk in the Majority World to human rights in Burma.

Peace News

Peace News in print is written by and for activists, campaigners and radical academics. It is produced as a monthly tabloid from the Peace House in London and is part of the Peace News Trustees group of companies.

Permaculture Magazine
Permaculture Magazine
They describe themselves as an, "leading environmental magazine is the vanguard of permaculture. Practical thought provoking articles on organic gardening, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, eco-villages, alternative technology, eco-architecture and building, community development and much more, written by leading experts, plus useful tips from readers. Packed with informative articles, illustrations, designs, news, reviews, book, tool and product reviews, letters, contacts, and details of courses."

It's a great magazine, but they do have a disconcerting habit of only reviewing products that they sell, which undermines the feeling of impartiality.

Singletrack Magazine
Singletrack Magazine
This is probably the only MTB magazine intended for the 'adult' off-road cyclist. The photography is great, the articles are interesting and of a good length.

Probably the best cycling magazine about at the moment. The only problem is it's not available from your local newsagent, they only seem to be available by subscription or from certain cycle shops.

magazines and newspapers outside the UK

Car Busters

Car Busters Magazine is published four times a year by the World Carfree Network and produced by an international activist team in Prague, Czech Republic. It is a 32-page print magazine critiquing our society's car culture and exploring positive alternatives.

Whole Earth Magazine

Tools and ideas. Whole Earth shows you ways to take back your power and put it to use. Here you'll find information about restoring your local ecosystem, citizen advocacy, and socially responsible investing.
radio in the UK
BBC Radio 4

Radio 4 is like an old friend in times of need, it's always there, reliable, constant, entertaining, sometimes infuriating. But I would never be without it. I can honestly say I would happily pay the license fee for Radio 4 alone. You can listen live on-line or the excellent listen again service, for those with a high speed connection. Check out the environmental series Costing the Earth & Home Planet, science programme Material World and 'From our Own Correspondent' for what really is going on it the world. Far to much to list.

BBC World Service

Broadcasting the news in 43 languages, plus so much more, you really need to look for yourselves. The great thing is, where as once the World Service wasn't very easy to get in the UK, with the advent of Broadband internet, you can get whatever you want whenever you want! Hail to the BBC! - again.

Bob Harris
Master of radio - Bob Harris
Bob has several shows on the BBC playing a variety of music from Country through Rock and alternative Folk. These shows are also available on the BBC listen again service www.bbc.co.uk/radio.

Well worth a listen, no DJ ego here.

Resonance 104.4FM

Resonance 104.4 fm is London's first radio art station, brought to you by London Musicians' Collective.

It started broadcasting on May 1st 2002. Its brief is to provide a radical alternative to the universal formulae of mainstream broadcasting.

It's particularly worth listening to the The Bike Show, broadcast on Resonance and also available on a podcast from it's website here.

The Grain Division

The Grain Division - This is a bit of a mystery, I have this station on my favourites and I don't know where it came from, who recommended it (apologies if it was you), so obviously I've not listened it - but I will! They say 'This site is home to The Grain Division internet radio, and web presence for our regular free showcase event, The Grain Division.com Presents... at Carpe Diem, Leeds, every 3rd Saturday of the month. We also offer free airtime and profile promotion to independent and unsigned bands from all over the world.' and they're based in the UK!

UK Radio Stations Broadcasting on the Internet

The Internet's most up-to-date list of live links for UK radio stations simultaneously broadcasting on the web and boy are there a lot of them!

radio in the USA
FolkAlley.com

FolkAlley went online in September 2003, offering live-streaming music over the Internet 24 hours a day. The hosted stream is produced by WKSU-FM in Kent, OH, which also built and maintains the web site. The Folk Alley play list is created by senior host, Jim Blum, and Folk Alley Music Director Linda Fahey and features a distinctive blend of the best of singer/songwriter, Celtic, acoustic, Americana, traditional, and world sounds.

Grassy Hill Radio

Grassy Hill is a folk music support organization that does several things:

Grassy Hill Radio - the Internet's finest all-music folk/acoustic stream.
Grassy Hill Barn Concerts - a monthly series of folk concerts in the beautiful rural hills of Lyme, CT.
Internet support for a variety of folk related activities.
Sponsorship of folk festivals and conferences throughout the Northeast US and beyond, including the North American Folk Alliance .

Hober
Hober - Unvarnished Music
They describe it as 'Hober is just another person with a radio station. Hober broadcasts from a geodesic dome in the oak forest just outside Washington DC.'

'Hober is an attempt to bring human warmth to the computer environment. Let's face it, there are most likely a lot of artificial creations in the vicinity of your computers right now. The last thing you need is artificial music. Hober brings unvarnished sounds into a glossy space.'
... and they're not too far wrong!

Online Folk Festival

The Online Folk Festival is new to me, I haven't had a chance to tune it yet, but I like the look of the music they play. Their tag line is 'The Online Folk Festival--because you're not a corporate music drone!'. Sounds good to me!

Radio Free World

Radio Free World - 'RFW is a media guide and Webcaster dedicated to the idea that people deserve to experience many alternatives when it comes to entertainment and information. Our programs feature eclectic music and spoken word submitted by * independent * artists.' Sounds good to me.

Radio-Locator

Radio-Locator - (formally the MIT list of radio on the internet)
An absolutely daunting number of links! A very good search facility, but also with irritating pop-ups that got through my pop-up blocker! They say Radio-Locator 'lists all known sites on the Internet that publish information about broadcast radio stations. Although we strive for accuracy, the maintainers of this list are not responsible for the information pointed to by these links. While there are several other extensive lists of radio stations available on the World Wide Web, radio-locator is, to the best of our knowledge, the most comprehensive. Feel free to make links to this page.'

Whole Wheat Radio

I lost about 3 days of my life when I discovered WWR. I tuned in & zoned out. This 24/7 station is run from a 12' x 12' cabin in the woods of Alaska. Jim & Esther combine a good sense of humour with the exploration of their priorities, in their non-materialistic lifestyle. The station is run automatically, with the input of listeners for the majority of day, but this is broken by an hour long Rant at 11 - 12am (Alaska time) each weekday.

There is a lively chat page, where listeners can chat with each other and broadcast their views live on-air, this really is audience participation. Beware the Rant hour is not child or work friendly. The jewel in this crown are the House Concerts, real life concerts in the wilds of Alaska broadcast across the net. These can be downloaded from the website in MP3 format. Whole Wheat Radio plays great independent music, broadcast on the web with humour and style. Radio, real non-ego radio, doesn't get any better than this.

WUMB Folk Radio

WUMB Folk Radio is based at The University of Massachusetts in Boston. 'WUMB Radio is dedicated to produce, acquire, and disseminate high quality, diverse and valued public service radio programming to significant audiences. The radio station is committed to serving as a local and national resource for the cultivation, promotion and preservation of various genres of folk music through its radio programming and selected enterprises.'

Eco

Eco is an online environmental newspaper, it's based in the UK but it covers articles of international interest.

They say, 'As a publication, Eco aims to promote greater awareness of the natural environment by showing a more holistic and systems-based view of world news.'

Daily Mail Watch-watching them : watching us

I don't think I'm exaggerating to say that this man is not a fan of the Daily Mail, and that's good enough for me.

Have a look at his blog as well, there's some really interesting stuff there.

I Believe in the BBC

An interesting blog site founded immediately after the publication of the Hutton report and the Governments attacks on the BBC. Although not being updated anymore it gives an interesting insight to the feelings of the public outside the media spotlight.

Speaking personally I think the BBC is one of the most important institutions we have in the UK and one of which I'm very proud.
